Drago Academy is a family oriented facility that emphasizes martial arts training as a means to add balance to your life through the art of Jiu-Jitsu. We are creating stronger families and serve our Manlius community by offering an authentic and safe martial arts experience lead by world class instructors. By offering structured programs and technical training methods for students of all ages and skill levels, we are able to focus on developing self-disclipline, valuing personal excellence, and rewarding individual progress for each of our students.
The history of Jiu-Jitsu is a colorful one, originating in Japan as JuJutsu. In 1914 Mitsuyu Maeda of Japan traveled to Brazil where the Japanese art was introduced to Carlos Gracie at the age of 14. Carlos became quickly enthralled with Maedas' ability to defeat much larger and stronger opponents, and it was then that Carlos Gracie began his training of what is now known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) was designed by the Gracies to give a smaller person the means to defend themselves against a larger aggressor using leverage and timing. Learning Jiu-Jitsu provides a safe way to develop solid self defense skills and to get in shape without typical weight training or the monotonous treadmill.
Drago Academy is the first and only BJJ school in CNY to utilize the use of foam block sub-flooring. This state-of-the-art subflooring was specifically created for gymnastics and later adopted by Judo centers out west.
The world wide headquarters for Judo, the Kodokan institiute in Japan, uses a similar spring floor system. The floor is designed to absorb and disperse the energy from landing on the mat, making minimal impact, therefore contributing to a safe and injury free landing. Simply rolling mats over concrete is not condusive to a safe and healthy learning experience.
At Drago Academy our floating floor is a daily reminder of the commitment we have made to bringing the best experience possible to our students for years to come. You have to feel it to believe it!
